Plot
In Budapest, IMF agent Trevor Hanaway is killed by assassin Sabine Moreau, who steals his file containing details about a Russian nuclear extremist named Kurt Hendricks. IMF agent Jane Carter and technician Benji Dunn extract Ethan Hunt from a Moscow prison, where he was serving time for killing six Serbian nationalists responsible for the death of his wife Julia. They inform him that Hanaway was part of a team assigned to track down Hendricks, who has stolen a Russian nuclear launch device and is planning to start a global nuclear war. The IMF assigns Hunt to lead the team and stop Hendricks.
Hunt's team infiltrates the Kremlin to locate files identifying Hendricks' contact, code-named "Cobalt". However, they are ambushed by Hendricks' men and forced to flee. During their escape, a bomb planted by Hendricks destroys the Kremlin. The IMF is implicated in the bombing and shut down by the U.S. government, forcing Hunt and his team to go rogue. The U.S. President initiates "Ghost Protocol", a black operation that disavows the entire IMF.
Hunt contacts IMF analyst William Brandt in Dubai and enlists his help. Brandt reveals himself as a former field agent who was assigned to protect Julia and witnessed her death. Hunt tells Brandt that Julia's death was staged to protect her from further attacks by Hunt's enemies. The team intercepts Hendricks' contact in Dubai, who turns out to be Moreau. She delivers the launch device to Hendricks' right-hand man Wistrom in exchange for diamonds. Hunt's team follows Wistrom to Mumbai, where Hendricks is planning to use a satellite broadcast station to transmit the launch codes to a Russian nuclear submarine.
Hunt confronts Hendricks and tries to persuade him to abort his plan, but Hendricks refuses and escapes with the launch device. Hunt chases him to an automated parking garage and fights him for the device. Meanwhile, Carter seduces an Indian tycoon named Brij Nath to gain access to his satellite controls. Dunn hacks into the satellite system and overrides Wistrom's signal. Brandt disarms one of the two nuclear missiles targeted at San Francisco and Los Angeles. Hunt kills Hendricks by dropping him off the edge of the parking garage along with the launch device, which is destroyed on impact.
The team meets in Seattle and celebrates their success. Brandt confesses to Hunt that he had been assigned to kill him before Julia's death was faked, but failed to do so. Hunt reveals that he knew about Brandt's mission and forgives him for his guilt. He also tells Brandt that he had seen Julia alive in Seattle before leaving for Mumbai, implying that she is still under protection. The team shares a toast before going their separate ways.
